Chef Mickey’s Breakfast - Contemporary

January 2009    Submitted by Karen

I have eaten here twice in the past two years.  The first time with my newly diagnosed celiac daughter in January of 2007 and the second time in January of 2009 with four gluten free diners at the table.   Both times the chef came out to visit and bring us gluten free Mickey Mouse Waffles that looked exactly like the ones on the buffet!  There were lots of buffet items to choose from, especially from the fruit and salad section.  One of our fearless GF diners was celebrating a birthday that morning.  Our waitress brought out a regular “wheaty” cupcake for her.  When the chef came to take our order, he replaced it with a delicious GF slice of chocolate mousse cake.

Cape May Cafe Clam Bake - Beach/Yacht Club

We had a 5:30 ADR on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 and were seated within 10 minutes of checking in.  Our family has food intolerances (all of us are gluten free) and we always need to see the chef before ordering.  The waitress Karen came by to take our drink orders and I was thrilled to find out the restaurant was carrying gluten free beer (Redbridge).  Chef Anthony came by a few minutes later and took me on a tour of the buffet.  There were plenty of choices that were fine for us to eat. The restaurant makes a point to try to offer single ingredient food choices (i.e. the corn on the cob is not pre-buttered for those with dairy intolerances and many of the sauces are on the side).  Anthony offered to make just about anything on the buffet that we could not eat.  For our dinner he brought rice pasta tossed with olive oil and vegetables for our family to share, as well as, hot rolls and a Caesar salad without croutons.  The four of us also ate our fill of shrimp. clams, and mussels.  For dessert we had gluten free brownies topped with ice cream and chocolate syrup.  My husband declared that it was one of the best meals on our vacation.

On a return trip in January 2009, the service was just as good.  The chef brought us a plate us broiled salmon without the soy sauce.  Dessert included a decadent ice cream sundae made with gf brownies.

Beaches and Cream - Beach/Yacht Club

We stopped into Beaches and Cream on 10/30 after a long day at Animal Kingdom.   We were able to get seats at the counter.  Our family has food intolerances (all of us are gluten free) and we always need to see the chef before ordering.   The chef came right out and assured us that a gluten free dinner would be no problem.  The kids got hotdogs with no bun (although they did have gf buns available).  My husband and I got hamburgers on tapioca buns.  The chef made us our own batch of French fries.  We had lots of fun watching the waitresses make Kitchen Sink Ice Cream Sundaes for other tables.  It was a great basic quick dinner.  It is a really small shop, but it is big on charm.  We had lots of fun talking to our waiter Brian.  Sitting at the counter gives the whole meal a more intimate feel, as if you are regulars at the shop rather than just another Disney meal.

I was really looking forward to this. I got a burger with a GF bun (which I thought was nice) and fries. They said the fries would take a bit, as they had to cook them next door at a dedicated fryer. They were still good & hot when they got to me. Nice staff, yummy food!

Market Place Cafe - Beach/Yacht Club

October 2008    Submitted by Karen

On the first day at the Beach Club, I stopped into the Market Place Café to see if I could get a light lunch.  My family has food intolerances (we are all gluten free) and it is always tricky to get anything quickly.  I inquired at the food station about what was gluten free and a manager quickly arrived to speak with me.  He told me with a little bit of notice I could get a gluten free sandwich.  I came back a half a hour later and picked up a roast beef sandwich with brie and caramelized onions on a gluten free roll, two fruit cups, two chocolate puddings and two juice boxes.  My family and I had a lovely little feast by the pool and my husband and I agreed that it was the best roast beef sandwich we had had in years.

We stopped here a second time the morning we checked out.  I placed an order with the manager for two gf roast beef sandwiches to go.  We took them to the airport with us and ate them for lunch.

Whispering Canyon Cafe - Wilderness Lodge

Who knew that breakfast could be this much fun?  All the adults in our party ordered the western omelet skillet and the two children had pancakes.  The gluten free pancakes were enormous - much to the delight of the eight year old eating them.   I am pretty sure that our skillets were delicious, but truthfully, we were too busy laughing.  If you ever eat there, please be sure to ask for ketchup...

Kouzzina - Boardwalk (Previous location of Spoodles)

I really enjoyed this experience. The chef was great. My friend got the assorted spreads, so they brought me a GF pita so I could try too. I loved the Kalamata fig spread! My DH & I split the Flank Steak. It was interesting. I thought I'd love the potatoes more than I did. Nice experience, great staff!

Jiko - Animal Kingdom Lodge

Now this I thought would be the best service, etc, because of hearing about the special GF menu. I think it was just my server, because he didn't seem very knowledgeable at all. I asked if there was any bread I could have, and he acted like he wasn't sure. He went to ask. My DH & I split the Tangle wood chicken. I was just not into the spices that night, as I wasn't that thrilled. The waiter didn't give my any dessert options, but I can't remember if it was on the GF menu or not. Oh well. This was my greatest disappointment, if I can use such a word. The food was okay, but the service didn't seem to be with it GF-wise.
